Program Scope

The Bay Area's broad spectrum of artistic activity is mirrored by the Art Department. A large, professionally active art history and art studio faculty establishes the creative and scholarly nucleus for the teaching program. As many as thirty regular and part-time faculty teach over 75 courses each semester. The Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

4_Art Ed.jpgThe Bachelor of Arts degree in Art at SF State provides innovative and rigorous Concentrations in Art Education, Art History and varied studio Arts as well as a concentration in Art history/Studio Art. An art major requires a minimum of 46 units of art courses, including 12 units of lower division core requirements and a minimum of 28 units of upper division work.

Please view application delivery notes below. -- The Master of Arts in Art degree with an emphasis in Art History at San Francisco State University is designed to provide professional training for the student preparing to enter a doctoral program or to work in jobs requiring a Master's level of work in art history. Those jobs can include art gallery work, museum, community and educational programs, neighborhood arts programs and secondary and community college teaching.

Please view application delivery notes below. -- The three-year Master of Fine Arts degree program at San Francisco State University is designed to provide professional competency for the student pursuing a career as an artist including working in public roles, such as teaching, etc. Students are accepted into the program in the following areas of concentration or combination's thereof: Ceramics, Conceptual and Information Arts, New Practices, Painting and Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Textiles.

Ceramics 2.jpgStudents wishing to declare a minor in art must fill out the add/change of major/minor form, available at http://www.sfsu.edu/~admisrec/reg/formstoc.html. Students need to see an art department faculty advisor to obtain their signature on the add/change of major/minor form before the form can be submitted to the department office for the chair's signature.
